Over 15,000 scientists from 184 countries have endorsed an article by the Alliance of World Scientists that warns citizens about the environmental impacts of consuming animal products. This article serves as an update to a 1992 article by the Union of Concerned Scientists that outlined how existing human practices would lead to devastating environmental degradation including:

  • ocean acidification and dead zones
  • ozone depletion
  • decreased freshwater availability
  • marine life depletion
  • forest loss
  • biodiversity loss

The new revision pushes for more urgent actions and explains how negative environmental trends have accelerated in the past 25 years. "It is also time to re-examine and change our individual behaviors," it advises, "including limiting our own reproduction...and drastically diminishing our per capita consumption of fossil fuels, meat, and other resources."
