Amazon Set to Buy Whole Foods

Amazon is ready to make their biggest push into traditional retailing through a $13 billion deal to buy Whole Foods. Whole Foods has been at the forefront of the grocery industry's move towards natural and organic products since 1978. The deal is set to be completed later in the year, and is expected to shake up the grocery retail world.

“Millions of people love Whole Foods Market because they offer the best natural and organic foods, and they make it fun to eat healthy," says Amazon founder and chief executive Jeff Bezos. "Whole Foods Market has been satisfying, delighting and nourishing customers for nearly four decades – they’re doing an amazing job and we want that to continue.”

Critics and supporters agree that until now, Amazon has been only a looming threat to the grocery industry. With this new power play, everything could change. Neil Saunders, GlobalData Retail managing director, believes that the deal could make Whole Foods more competitive online and improve its supply chain logistics whilst proving “potentially terrifying” for rivals.
