Australia Bans Cosmetic Animal Testing

This week, Australia took a major step towards a cruelty-free future. The Senate has passed the Industrial Chemicals Bill 2017, which bans cosmetic animal testing nationwide. According to the bill, the government will no longer accept animal testing as proof of safety or efficiency of cosmetic ingredients or products.

“We are pleased to welcome this milestone in moving to end reliance on cruel and outdated cosmetic animal testing in Australia,” says Hannah Stuart of Humane Society International (HSI). “This is a huge win for animals, consumers, and science.” Since the bill was introduced, HSI has worked with the Australian government to ensure every ingredient is covered under the ban. HSI is also working on developing non-animal based testing methods.

Worldwide, recent legislation has made it more difficult for cosmetics companies that continue to test on animals. In California, the Cruelty-Free Cosmetics Act will prohibit the sale of products tested on animals after January 1, 2020.
