What's next on the plant-based milk horizon? Übermilk by vegan brand Califia Farms, set to launch this spring at Whole Foods Markets nationwide. This oat-based milk will be fortified with pea protein, sunflower seeds, and flaxseed oil, making it nutritionally on-par with dairy protein. Übermilk will also be lower in sugar and higher in vitamin D and calcium than dairy milk.
“I don’t know when, but we just feel like there is a critical mass of factors under the surface, whether its animal rights, the environment, or just the diversity of great quality products out there now in plant-based could just add up to a tipping point where the decline in dairy may suddenly accelerate, and you have to think ahead," says Califia Farms CEO Greg Steltenpohl.
Übermilk aims to use the high protein content of legumes to top other plant-based milks, such as rice and coconut, which typically contain only 1-2 grams of protein per serving. By closing the plant-based and dairy nutrition gap, it has the potential to nullify all arguments in favor of animal-derived milk. Three cheers for the power of peas!
