Major Dog Meat Market Shuts Down in South Korea

The Gupo Livestock Market in Busan, once one of the largest dog meat markets in South Korea, is being shut down and turned into a public park. The 19 dog meat vendors at the market will end their businesses, thanks to the efforts of organizations like Humane Society International (HSI).

To Nara Kim of HSI, this represents the end of a cruel era. “HSI has been working with dog meat farmers in South Korea for nearly four years helping them close their flagging businesses as more people in the county turn away from dog meat," says Kim.

According to HSI, more than 2 million dogs are slaughtered in this industry annually. The public opinion is shifting, and consumption is on the decline, with 70% of South Koreans saying that they won't eat dog meat in the future. HSI continues to fight for the dogs that suffer from the dog meat trade.
