Meat Supplier Sued for Euthanasia Drug and Horse Meat Found in Dog Food

This past week, Evanger's Dog and Cat Food filed a $20 million lawsuit against one of its meat suppliers, Bailey Farms LLC. Evanger's alleges that a meat shipment from Bailey Farms, labelled "inedible hand boned beef," contained both horse meat and pentobarbital, a euthanasia drug. This 43,340 pound shipment was used to produce 50,000 cans of Hunk of Beef dog food, which killed a dog in Washington State and sickened four others.

A Michigan State University lab test confirmed the presence of pentobarbital, and private lab results found horse DNA samples in the food. In an FDA report, inspectors also noted food safety problems at Evanger's Wheeling, Illinois plant, where its dog food is produced.
