Spirulina: A Superfood for Dogs

Looking to add a superfood boost to your pup's diet? Spirulina is an excellent source of protein, B vitamins, and essential fatty acids. Veterinarian Dr. Lorelei Wakefield explains the benefits of this green superfood for dogs!

"Spirulina is a cyanobacteria (blue-green algae) that is used as a food supplement.  Spirulina is highly nutritious and can be considered a superfood.  Dried spirulina is about 60% protein.  It is also rich in B vitamins, though it does not contain B12.  Spirulina contains high levels of essential fatty acids, particularly GLA.  GLA is an omega-6 fatty acid with anti-inflammatory properties.  This supplement is full of antioxidants like vitamins E and C.

"Spirulina may be beneficial to dogs with allergic skin conditions, cancer, and heart disease."

"Since spirulina is considered a supplement, it is not inspected by the U.S. government for contamination.  As a result, it is important to look for high-quality brands with excellent standards and regular testing.  Organic spirulina is best.  To be safe, do not give spirulina to dogs with a history of liver disease."
