Vegan Pet Parents Want More Nutritional Info, Says Survey

How do vegan pet parents feel about feeding their dogs and cats a vegan diet? A new survey by Sarah Dodd et al. suggests that the most common concern about plant-based pet foods is the nutritional completeness of these diets.

Survey says...

3,673 pet parents were surveyed in order to identify concerns regarding conventional animal-based pet foods and plant-based pet foods. "Of the pet owners who did not currently feed plant-based diets but expressed interest in doing so, a large proportion (45%; 269/599) desired more information demonstrating the nutritional adequacy of plant-based diets," the researchers found. There was an overall lack of concern regarding plant-based diets being unnatural.

Among all pet parents surveyed, the most common concern regarding meat-based pet foods was for the welfare of farm animals (39%).

Many pet parents are interested in feeding their pets a vegan diet due to ethical concerns surrounding animal welfare, but are worried that they will be compromising the health of their pet. More research is needed in order to determine the specific nutritional concerns that vegan pet parents face.

Are vegan diets nutritionally complete?

Any diet, whether it's vegan or animal-based, can be nutritionally incomplete if not formulated properly. It's important to choose a diet that is complete and balanced to ensure that your dog is receiving proper nutrition. Commercial vegan dog foods are typically nutritionally complete and balanced. V-dog kibble meets all AAFCO standards for adult dog nutrition and was formulated by a team of experts in canine nutrition.

Homemade dog foods, both meat-based and plant-based, require extra attention to ensure that they are nutritionally complete.

What is the latest research on vegan diets for dogs?

A new study at Ross University is in the process of examining dogs that switched from meat-based food to v-dog's vegan dog food. The published abstract is available here.

Previous studies have reported healthy clinical examinations, improved skin and coat symptoms, and excellent digestibility in dogs fed vegan diets.
