U.S. Vegan Population Up 600%

According to the report Top Trends in Prepared Foods 2017 by research firm Global Data, those who identify as vegan now compose 6% of the US population. This represents a 600% increase from the 1% identifying as vegan in 2014.

Several trends factor into this shift, including the rise of "ethical eating."

"Consumers connect ethical and sustainable lifestyles with wellbeing and wellness, creating demand for more ethical prepared foods," the report claims. Rising awareness of the impact of meat consumption is driving demand for meatless product alternatives.

In the medical world, plant-based diets are gaining recognition as providing vast health benefits. Many US hospitals are beginning to remove processed meats from their menus and replacing them with healthy vegan meals.

Plant-based foods are predicted to grow tremendously in the coming years, with forecasters estimating that the alternative meat market will hit $5.2 billion by 2020, and the plant-based milk sector will hit $16 billion by 2018. Cruelty-free lab-grown meat may make its way to the forefront to combat ethical and environmental concerns associated with animal agriculture.
