How to Help the Environment as a Pet Parent

Since day one, our goal at v-dog has been simple: to make dog food that’s compassionate to all beings. But it’s not enough to just make mindful choices when it comes to dog food - we also want to ensure our everyday actions as dog parents are made with respect for all animals, all beings, and Mother Earth.

From investing in sustainable pet products and dog toys to opting for compostable dog poop bags and vegan dog food - there are so many ways to shop mindfully with love for your dog and the planet. Keep reading for a list of ways to be a more eco-conscious pet parent.

How to help the environment as a pet parent: from vegan dog food to natural pet products

1.  Select Sustainable Dog Toys

When shopping for dog toys, look for products made from recyclable, upcycled, and non-toxic materials. Two brands we suggest looking into include West Paw and  Green Toys

2. Make Homemade Dog Treats

By making homemade dog treats for your pup, you’ll likely save money and waste! They’re generally less pricey and they come with less waste.

3. Pick Up After Your Dog (& Consider Compostable Dog Poop Bags)

Research shows pet dogs produce 21.2 billion pounds of poop each year - and pet feces is one of the biggest ways they spread bacteria (even potentially parasites.) The most important thing is to not leave dog poop on the ground, which probably goes without saying but is still worth reminding. From there, often the best thing you can do is research your dog waste bags and seek out compostable and biodegradable options

4. Adopt Don’t Shop

You likely see those three words a lot - but they’re important. It’s estimated that there are more than six million companion animals in need of a home every year. Rather than purchase a dog through a puppy mill, dog shop, or breeder, open your home to one of the many animals in need. This not only helps the dog you adopt, but it also opens up shelter space for more homeless animals.

5. Invest in Natural Pet Products for Grooming

Pamper your pet with organic and natural shampoos that are free of synthetic fragrances, dyes, and harsh chemicals. The more pronounceable ingredients, the better! Here are some brands that are known for natural and plant-based pet products:

6. Fuel Up Your Furry Friend with Vegan Dog Food

Last but not least, nourish your dog with vegan food. This is one of the most impactful ways you can help the planet. According to a study by Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences,  plant-based lifestyle cuts greenhouse gases by up to 70 percent. And studies show that someone following a plant-based diet uses five times less water than someone with a meat-based diet.
