SF Opens New Animal Shelter with Rooftop Dog Run
April 1, 2021
San Francisco's Animal Care and Control shelter just got a modern upgrade. The brand new, state-of-the-art building was a $77 million project focused on improving the safety and comfort of the 7,000+ animals taken in each year. It's the first shelter in the Bay Area to have a flushable porcelain "dog toilet" as well as a rooftop dog run with porous turf and a catch basin underneath.
The new building also features roomier cages, kennels with windows, a modern veterinary suite, and a separate exercise area for bunnies. Now equipped with steel reinforcing beams, the shelter is designed to be earthquake-safe.
Due to the pandemic, pets are now paired with their new parents over a video call before meeting in person. Visit sfanimalcare.org to meet the adoptable animals.
